A master of found-footage cinema, Gustav Deutsch has spent much of his career “combing film archives throughout the world for neglected or forgotten material.” His new film Shirley: Visions of Reality (2013) is a departure, a live-action movie that brings thirteen Edward Hopper paintings to life, creating a dialogue not just between painting and film, but between the lives of its characters and the sweep of history.
