A master of found-footage cinema, Gustav Deutsch has spent much of his career “combing film archives throughout the world for neglected or forgotten material.” His new film Shirley: Visions of Reality (2013) is a departure, a live-action movie that brings thirteen Edward Hopper paintings to life, creating a dialogue not just between painting and film, but between the lives of its characters and the sweep of history. As film scholar Tom Gunning writes, Gustav Deutsch “cuts through the thicket of the mass of images with the penetration of a vision alert for what still is alive in film, teaching us the process of rediscovery that—film is.”
