Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room

Carnal Knowledge
Dir. Mike Nichols. 1971, 97 mins. Digital projection. With Jack Nicholson, Art Garfunkel, Ann-Margret, Candice Bergen, Rita Moreno, Carol Kane. Nichols’s fourth feature was another zeitgeisty conversation piece (as The Graduate had been), tracking two college roommates (Nicholson and Garfunkel) over 25 years of romantic and sexual exploits. Written by Pulitzer Prize–winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, Carnal Knowledge is a bracing hangover from ’60s sex romps, exposing the damages, particularly to women, of a sexual revolution coopted by men. Moreno makes an indelible impression as a prostitute who sees through Nicholson’s bullishness.

The Ritz
Dir. Richard Lester. 1976, 91 mins. Digital projection. With Jack Weston, Rita Moreno, Jerry Stiller, Kaye Ballard, F. Murray Abraham, Paul B. Price, Treat Williams. Lester’s adaptation of Terrence McNally’s Broadway play stars Rita Moreno as hustling hoofer Googie Gomez, a role that won her a Tony. Beleaguered businessman Gaetano Proclo (Weston) seeks refuge in a New York nightclub, unaware (for a remarkably long time) that the clientele is mostly homosexual—save for Googie, who’s so eager to make it big that she mistakes the hapless Gaetano for a hotshot Broadway producer.
