Dir. James Whale. 1935, 75 mins. 35mm. With Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester, Colin Clive, Ernest Thesiger, Valerie Hobson. Dr. Frankenstein (Clive) is recovering from his encounter with his creation when his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), re-enters his life, manipulating his pupil into continuing his evil experiments. Unbeknownst to Frankenstein, Pretorius is also manipulating the Monster (Karloff), who survived his fiery fate in the first film’s finale and has been wandering the countryside in search of a friend, a tragedy which Pretorius is happy to take advantage of. As iconic as its predecessor, Bride of Frankenstein features a brief yet enduring appearance by Elsa Lanchester as the Bride and is notable both for further humanizing the Frankenstein Monster and for its queer subtext.
