Dir. Mel Stuart. U.S., 1971, 100 mins. With Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, Peter Ostrum. In this enduring musical fantasy, Gene Wilder stars as the inscrutable Willy Wonka, a candy king who lives hidden away from the world in his marvelous and mysterious chocolate factory. Based on Roald Dahl's 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this mesmerizing fantasy follows impoverished, good-souled young Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) as he and four other children win a coveted tour behind Wonka’s impenetrable gates. Yet their journey isn’t quite what he and his chaperone Grandpa Joe (Jack Albertson) anticipated. With marvelous inventiveness and a wily, trickster of a performance by Wilder, this remains one of the most beloved of all family films. Rated: G
