Dir. David Lynch. U.S., 1984, 136 mins. With Kyle MacLachlan, Kenneth McMillan, Linda Hunt, Brad Dourif, Francesca Annis. Lynch’s cult classic is a surreal, futurist visualization of Frank Herbert’s classic 1965 novel. Living in a desert world full of gigantic sandworms controlled by a pimply, galactic emperor (McMillan), the Duke’s son Paul Atreides (MacLachlan) leads a conquest to defeat the emperor and avenge his father’s death. With extravagant production design by Anthony Masters (2001: A Space Odyssey), cinematography by Freddie Francis (The Elephant Man), and Oscar-nominated sound design, Dune is a must see ’80s sci-fi adventure from one of American cinema’s true originals. Rated: PG-13
