Dir. Costa-Gavras. 1969. 127 mins. Restored DCP. With Yves Montand, Irene Papas, Jean-Louis Trintignant., Jacques Perrin. An investigator and a photojournalist examine the political intrigue and corruption that led to the assassination of a prominent leftist professor. A fictionalized account of the 1963 killing of Grigoris Lambrakis, who led the opposition to the placement of Polaris missiles in Greece, Z was Costa-Gavras' international breakthrough, featuring an all star cast and cinematography by French New Wave legend Raoul Coutard. Winner of two Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Film, and two prizes at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival for the director and actor Jean-Louis Trintignant.
