Dir. Bong Joon Ho. 2019, 132 mins. DCP. In Korean with English subtitles. With Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Jo Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-sik, Park So-dam, Lee Jeong-eun. The latest film from Korean master Bong Joon Ho (Okja, The Host) is a pitch-black contemporary fairy tale about two families symbiotically linked. The Park family is the picture of aspirational wealth while the Kim family is rich in street smarts but not much else. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children manage to install themselves as tutor and art therapist in the Park's spacious home and quickly become indispensable, and ferreting their parents into the fold so that the whole clan begins living off the wealthier family's opulence and cluelessness. But when an interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem forged between the families.
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, and voted the #1 film of the year by Film Comment Magazine.
