Dir. Joseph L. Mankiewicz. 1947, 104 mins. DCP. With Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison, George Sanders. Mankiewicz’s evocative supernatural romance stars the effortlessly ethereal Gene Tierney as a young widow who moves into a windswept seaside cottage. When the home turns out to be haunted by the ghost of a bitter sea captain—played by Rex Harrison—she decides to befriend rather than fear the spirit. As a result she becomes his ghost writer, working on a book about his life. Moving imperceptibly from comedy to tear-jerking drama, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is prime forties Hollywood filmmaking, exquisitely depicting coastal England at the turn of the twentieth century.
