Part of Verneuil Populaire: Vintage Thrillers from France’s Genre Maestro

Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater

Dir. Henri Verneuil. 1964, 130 min. Restored DCP. In French with live subtitling. With Jean-Paul Belmondo, Lino Ventura. Continuing Verneuil’s fascination with obsessive, rapacious men, Greed in the Sun again unites a charismatic bolter (Belmondo) with an experienced megastar (Lino Ventura) and flips the balance of power towards the younger man. This irreverent nod to The Wages of Fear features a fantastic desert heist/truck chase plot which is an excuse for multiplying the Audiard-scripted confrontations and signalling Verneuil’s route into the action genre proper. A powerful supporting cast (Gert Fröbe, Bernard Blier) turns up the heat still further.
