The Savage Eye (Dirs. Ben Maddow, Sidney Meyers, Joseph Strick. 1960, 88 mins. 35mm.)
Two films about the geographies of loss. One, an experimental work that depicts Los Angeles as a series of habitats: motel rooms, screens, and open vistas, easily traversable from within the female psyche. The second, an idiosyncratic city symphony narrated as a dialogue between a female divorcee and her (male) conscience, as imagined by Hollywood veterans (including Haskell Wexler and Ben Maddow) working on weekends. The Savage Eye, which is rarely screened, follows our fictional protagonist (portrayed by actress Barbara Bailey) between buses, beauty parlors, and the aftermath of real auto accidents, treating the city as a set of surfaces upon which life’s disappointments may be easily projected and reflected.—Courtney Stephens
