LIVE EVENT & SCREENING
Activist Filmmaking with Lawrence Chau

Part of Changing the Picture (2019)
Friday, May 24, 2019, 7:30 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room

This event features a dynamic discussion with actor/writer/producer Lawrence Chau (who may be best know for the Ghostly Encounters television series) and Rashid Shabazz, the Chief Marketing and Storytelling Officer at ColorofChange.org, the nation's largest online racial justice organization with over 1.4 million members, and actress/filmmaker Nadhege Ptah.

Their discussion will be preceded by the screening of Lawrence Chau's short film, Justice for Vincent.

Synopsis: A brutal case of bloodshed, a mother’s gut-wrenching loss, and a community’s outrage, Justice For Vincent is an intensely disturbing yet inspiring modern story about race told from a rarely seen Asian American perspective. The award-winning short film is based on the historic Vincent Chin case that that played a major role in the Asian American civil rights movement in the United States.

Mistaken for being Japanese, Chinese American citizen Chin was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat days before his wedding by two auto workers during the so-called “Japanese Auto Invasion” in Detroit 1982 — a crime that saw the murderers walk free with a mere $3,000 fine and three-year probation.

Archival images of the Chin case featured in the film were graciously provided by real life activists Helen Zia, Stewart Koh, and photojournalist Corky Lee.
