It should come as no surprise that Hecht, seen-it-all cynic and crucial contributor to the gangster film genre, would be a custom fit for the shadowy world of the postwar film noir, and sure enough the Hecht-scripted Where the Sidewalk Ends, stunningly shot by cinematographer Joseph LaShelle, and handled with gelid grace by Preminger, is one of the essential expressions of noir style. Dana Andrews has never been better than he is as a violence-prone New York City detective who, in covering up his accidental murder of an informer, accidentally puts his girlfriend’s father on the hot seat.
