Dir. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur. 2012, 164 mins. Digital projection. In English, Hindi, Kannada, and Bengali with English subtitles. With P.K. Nair, Saira Banu, Jahnu Barua. For Indian filmmakers and scholars, P.K. Nair is a legendary figure. He worked for three decades as the director of the National Film Archives of India in Pune, archiving many of India’s classic films while also introducing world cinema to Indian audiences. He is perhaps most well-known for discovering and preserving the only remaining nine films from India’s silent era. This ode to cinephilia interweaves stories from Nair’s upbringing, interviews with the many historians and filmmakers he influenced, and rare footage from early Indian masterpieces.
