Dir. Robert Altman. 1999, 112 mins. 35mm. With Glenn Close, Julianne Moore, Liv Tyler. In the small town of Holy Springs, Mississippi, a wealthy dowager nicknamed “Cookie” takes her own life: so begins this criminal comedy of the first order. The dowager’s playwright niece (Glenn Close) decides to save the family’s reputation: She will make the suicide look like a murder. She enlists her dysfunctional family in her cause, navigating the town’s sheriff department, out-of-town investigators, and a patrician lawyer. In Altman’s part farce, part morality play ensemble piece, Close threads everything together as the single-minded southern woman pushing her way through the police tape to arrange things just so.
