Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater

Dir. Darren Aronofsky. 2010, 108 mins. 35mm. With Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel. “Swan Lake. Done to death, I know. But not like this,” says the director of a New York ballet company near the beginning of Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 psychological thriller about the dark side of the creative process. Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a young dancer pushed to her physical and mental limits as she prepares to dance the dual lead roles in Tchaikovsky’s ballet. A backstage melodrama filled with doubles and mirrors, hallucinations and dreams, both onstage and off, Black Swan is a stylized fever dream, and one of production designer Thérèse DePrez’s most dazzling achievements.
