The Day After

Part of Three by Hong Sang-soo: All in a Year's Work
Sunday, September 16, 2018, 6:30 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Hong Sang-soo. 2017, 92 mins. Digital Projection. With Kwon Haehyo, Cho Yunhee, Joabang Ki, Kim Min-hee. In Korean with English subtitles. Book publisher Bongwan’s (Kwon) marriage is on the rocks after his wife discovers that he has been having an affair with his assistant. On her first day in the office, Bongwan’s new assistant (Kim) is charged with navigating the fallout of both of her boss’s relationships. With its destabilizing jumps through time and stark black-and-white photography, The Day After begins as a story of a man embroiled in romantic entanglements, but transforms into a heartfelt portrayal of a young woman on a quest for spiritual fulfillment.

"A lovely, intricately fractured story—past and present seamlessly slip into each other." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
