In French with English subtitles. “If we opened people up, we’d find landscapes,” Varda says in The Beaches of Agnes. “If we opened me up, we’d find beaches.” In this self-portrait of a life spent making movies, Varda revisits the beaches of her past, from the North Sea beaches of her childhood in Belgium to the years she spent in southern California with her husband Jacques Demy. With the help of elusive friend and filmmaker Chris Marker, who appears in the form of an orange cat and interjects in a digitally altered voice, Varda guides us through her films, reflecting on their themes and granting us a look behind the scenes. As the filmmaker explores her memories through photographs, film clips, and present-day reenactments, she reflects on the nature of memory itself. Both a career retrospective and a touching meditation on the passage of time, Varda’s unconventional autobiography won the French César for Best Documentary.
