Introduced by Annette Insdorf

Dir. Roman Polanski. 2002, 142 mins. In German, Russian, and English, with English subtitles. Digital projection. With Adrien Brody, Thomas Kretschmann, Frank Finlay. Roman Polanski won the Oscar for Best Director and the Palme D’Or at Cannes for his adaptation based on the autobiography of the acclaimed Polish composer Wladyslaw Szpilman about his survival during World War II. A composer and pianist, Szpilman played the last live music heard over Polish radio airwaves before Nazi artillery hit. Szpilman spent the duration of the war hiding in the ruins of Warsaw and scavenging for food and shelter. He eventually reclaimed his artistic gifts, and confronted his fears, with aid from the unlikeliest of sources.
