Dir. James Caan. 1980, 92 mins. 35mm print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive. With James Caan, Jill Eikenberry, Robert Viharo, Joe Grifasi, Barbra Rae, Danny Aiello. After spending the latter part of the 1970s frustrated by projects that did not turn out the way he had hoped, James Caan started the new decade by taking matters into his own hands, making his first and only movie as director. He plays Thomas Hacklin, Jr., a divorcee whose dedication to his two children is put to the test when they, along with their mother and her mob-informant husband, disappear into the witness protection program. It is a tale of a man driven to extremes yet told with remarkable restraint. "An unusually satisfying, almost perfectly scaled little melodrama about so-called ordinary people trapped in extraordinary events."—Vincent Canby, The New York Times
