With director Mila Turajlic in person

Dir. Mila Turajlic. 2017, 110 mins. In Serbian with English subtitles. A locked door inside a Belgrade apartment has kept one family physically separated from its past for over 70 years. As the filmmaker begins an intimate conversation with her mother—academic and activist Srbijanka Turajlić—the political fault line running through their home reveals a house and a country haunted by history. A chronicle of one Serbian family turns into a searing portrait of activism in times of turmoil, with each generation taking stock of what was lost, gained, and remains worth fighting for. Through subtly evocative framing and lighting, second-time filmmaker Turajlic turns her family home into a theater of remembrance and anguish, guiding her formidable mother—perhaps along with the country outside—forward through the past. Winner of Best Feature-Length Documentary at IDFA documentary festival.
