Dir. John Ford. 1952, 129 mins. DCP. With John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Barry Fitzgerald. Ford—born John Martin Feeney—once again returned to his Irish roots in The Quiet Man, sumptuously photographed in Technicolor by three-time Oscar winner Winton C. Hoch (who also shot She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Searchers). Sean Thornton (John Wayne), an ex-heavyweight from Pittsburgh, returns to his ancestral home in the Irish countryside, where he gets the fight of his life from strong-willed local girl Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara) who is every bit his equal.
