Dir. Akira Kurosawa. 1990, 120 mins. 35mm. With Akira Terao, Matsuko Baisho, Chishu Ryu, Martin Scorsese. In English and Japanese with English subtitles. Stepping in front of the camera for a brief but memorable performance, Martin Scorsese plays the French painter Vincent Van Gogh. This free-form work by the great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa dramatizes eight of the filmmaker's dreams and is filled with lyrical, occasionally surreal imagery.
