Wise, brilliant, and funny, Fran Lebowitz was an unknown on the New York literary scene when Andy Warhol hired her to write a column for Interview magazine in the early 1970s. Today, she is an acclaimed author with a legendarily acerbic wit. Directed in the inimitable and energetic style of Scorsese’s early documentaries Italianamerican and American Boy, Public Speaking captures the author in an onstage discussion with longtime friend and celebrated writer Toni Morrison at New York’s Waverly Inn, and on the streets of New York City.
