Dirs. Steve Barron, Jim Henson, Charles Sturridge. 1987–1988. Approx. 90 mins (each episode runs 30 mins.). With John Hurt, Brian Henson, Brenda Blethyn. In 1987, NBC premiered the first of nine episodes of The Storyteller, a series of classic folktales using contemporary filmmaking and special effects techniques. With scripts by Anthony Minghella, music score by Rachel Portman, and a dog sidekick played by Brian Henson, the show was acclaimed by audiences and critics. To honor the late John Hurt, the Museum will screen his debut as the title character of the Storyteller in the Emmy-winning pilot “Hans My Hedgehog”; “The Soldier and Death,” which was directed by Jim Henson; and “A Story Short,” the only episode in which the Storyteller plays a role in the story he tells.
