Postcards from the Edge

Part of Tribute to Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds
Saturday, January 21, 2017, 7:00 p.m.
Redstone Theater

Dir. Mike Nichols. 1990, 101 mins. 35mm. With Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman, Annette Bening. Based on the novel by Carrie Fisher. Carrie Fisher’s roman à clef, Postcards from the Edge, about a recovering drug-addicted actress (played by Streep) who lives with her alcoholic and controlling mother (played by MacLaine), is as mordantly witty and candid as the actress and writer herself, and one of the funniest of Hollywood novels. Mike Nichols directs the adaptation with the perfect combination of sharpness and good-spirited humor, anchored by one of the most ribald, delightful performances by Meryl Streep, who Donald J. Trump recently described as “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood.”
