India. Dir. Ananya Kasaravalli. 2015, 105 mins. DCP. North American premiere. In Kannada with English subtitles. With Shrunga B.V., K.G. Krishnamurthy, Ganesh Kelamane. This beguiling investigation of gender, performance, and identity takes the form of a faux-documentary as it examines the life of Hari (Shrunga B.V.), a male actor who plays female roles in traditional Yakshagana theater. As the lines between stage and reality begin to blur, Hari finds that his attempts to live as a man in everyday society lead to complications at home and in his social milieu. Ananya Kasaravalli brings a striking visual sensibility to her provocative feature debut.
