With a conversation with film critic David Thomson, author of Television: A Biography

Dir. Gus Van Sant. 1995, 106 mins. DCP of new restoration. With Nicole Kidman, Matt Dillon, Joaquin Phoenix. “The greatest writer about the big screen has now written a defining book about the small screen,” said Geoff Dyer about David Thomson’s panoramic and incisive new book Television: A Biography, which looks at the landscape of the medium’s history, from Donna Reed to Dennis Potter to Donald Trump. Thomson will talk about his book, and sign copies, following a screening of Gus Van Sant’s prophetic and brilliant satirical film To Die For, with a Buck Henry screenplay from Joyce Maynard’s based-on-truth novel about an aspiring New Hampshire TV personality who will do anything to become a star, including enlisting three teens to kill her husband.
