Redstone Theater

Followed by a panel discussion with Kamala Lopez, Darnell Martin, Victoria Pannell, and Maya Wiley

Presented in collaboration with the March on Washington Film Festival

Dir. Kamala Lopez. 2016, 93 mins. Digital projection. Executive produced by Liz Lopez and Patricia Arquette. With Patricia Arquette, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Gloria Steinem, Lea DeLaria.

Equal Means Equal offers an unflinching look at how women are treated in the United States today. Examining both real-life stories and precedent-setting legal cases, director Kamala Lopez uncovers how outdated and discriminatory attitudes inform and influence seemingly disparate issues, from workplace harassment to domestic violence, rape and sexual assault to the foster care system, and the healthcare conglomerate to the judicial system. Along the way, she reveals the inadequacy of present laws that claim to protect women, ultimately presenting a persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with director Kamala Lopez, filmmaker Darnell Martin (Cadillac Records, I Like It Like That), actress and teen activist Victoria Pannell, and moderated by Maya Wiley, Chairwoman of the Civilian Complaint Review Board and former adviser to Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Admission is free. RSVP here. All reserved tickets are released on a first-come, first-served basis; doors open at 6:30 p.m. All open seats will be released fifteen minutes prior to showtime, so please plan on arriving early.
