Nuts!

Part of New Adventures in Nonfiction
Saturday, October 1, 2016, 6:30 p.m.

With director Penny Lane in person

Dir. Penny Lane. 2016, 79 mins. Digital projection. Just another film about America, science, impotence, and goat testicles, Nuts! is one of the year’s most original and acclaimed documentaries, a film that questions the very facts it presents. Using animated reenactments, interviews, archival footage, and a suspiciously authoritative narrator, Penny Lane's astute and entertaining movie traces the life of Dr. John Romulus Brinkley, who rose from poverty and obscurity to the heights of celebrity, wealth, and influence in Depression-era America by building an empire out of a goat testicle impotence cure and a million-watt radio station. The tale of how and why Brinkley went from famous to infamous, and from a great American success story to the U.S. government's public enemy #1, is timely today, when the lines between salesmanship and political discourse are as blurred as ever.
