Dir. Diego Echeverria. 1984, 60 mins. Digital projection. New 30th anniversary restoration. In the early 1980s, South Williamsburg's Los Sures was one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. In fact, it had been called the worst ghetto in America. Shot in 1984, Diego Echeverria’s film skillfully represents the many challenges this place faced: drugs, gang violence, crime, abandoned real estate, racial tension, single-parent homes, and inadequate local resources. At the same time, the documentary also celebrates the vitality of this largely Puerto Rican and Dominican community.
