Miles Ahead

Part of Changing the Picture (2016)
Wednesday, March 30, 2016, 7:00 p.m.

With Miles Davis band member James Mtume and biographer Quincy Troupe in person
Part of the series Changing the Picture, sponsored by Time Warner Inc.

Dir. Don Cheadle. 2015, 100 mins. DCP courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics. With Don Cheadle, Ewan McGregor, Emayatzy Corinealdi. Don Cheadle makes a remarkable directorial debut and gives one of his best performances in this impressionistic and jazz-like portrait of the legendary Miles Davis. Moving fluidly between different time periods, the film—which was the Closing Night selection of the New York Film Festival—captures the spirit of an uncompromising genius and iconoclast. “[I]ts freeform riffs on highs and lows from the musician's life are a fine example of structure emulating the ever-evolving style of an artist defined by unrelenting experimentation.” (The Hollywood Reporter). The screening will be followed by a discussion offering an intimate firsthand view of Davis with James Mtume (a member of Davis’s band in the 1970s) and Quincy Troupe, Davis’s friend and collaborator on the acclaimed Miles: The Autobiography (Simon & Schuster, 1990). The discussion will be moderated by Warrington Hudlin, Museum trustee and president of the Black Filmmaker Foundation.
