Dir. Miguel Gomes. 2015, 125 mins/131 mins/125 mins. Digital projection. Thrillingly inventive, wildly ambitious, and as urgent as it is playful, Miguel Gomes’s contemporary fable adopts the structure from Arabian Nights in order to explore Portugal’s plunge into economic austerity. Between the talking cockerel running for office, a ghost poodle named Dixie, technocrats overcome by inexplicable erections, a filmmaker on the run from his own project (played by Gomes himself), and more such delights and absurdities, these three films—shown in their entirely on both Saturday and Sunday—are unlike anything you are apt to see this or any year.
