Nowhere Girl

Part of Fist and Sword (2016)
Friday, February 5, 2016, 7:30 p.m.

Dir. Mamoru Oshii. 2015. 85 mins. DCP. In Japanese with English subtitles. The latest film from Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) centers on the beautiful and talented Ai (Seino), a standout student at an all-girls art high school. Resentment over her abilities--from classmates and instructors alike--provokes a torrent of bullying, mockery and intolerable cruelty. As her daily life becomes an endless war, Ai stoically suffers it all--up to a point. Soon everyone will discover that there’s more to the mild-mannered Ai than meets the eye: She has a very specific, very fierce set of skills that are ready to be put into action.
