Shot over eight nights in the summer of 2014, on and around the well-trafficked corner of 125 Street and Lexington Avenue in Harlem, Field Niggas is a community portrait come vibrantly and indelibly to life. With a deli, a dollar store, a pizzeria, and a Pathmark supermarket as urban backdrops, photographer and filmmaker Khalik Allah converses with street denizens as he captures them in slow motion—sound and picture tantalizingly dance around each other, but rarely synch up. Over 60 enrapturing minutes, Allah whips up a kind of blues trance, with faces, like songs, fading in and out of view, and gathering into a powerful chorus that is intimate, heartfelt, and strange.
