Le garçu

Part of Maurice Pialat
Sunday, October 18, 2015, 7:00 p.m.

Introduced by Sylvie Pialat

Dir. Maurice Pialat. 1995, 102 mins. 35mm. With Gérard Depardieu, Géraldine Pailhas, Antoine Pialat, Dominique Rocheteau. In Pialat’s final film, shot in Cunlhat, the village of his birth, and a holiday retreat in Mauritius, he returned to the autobiographical mode of We Wont Grow Old Together and The Mouth Agape, dealing in fictional form with the death of his father and his new role as a father himself. Depardieu returns to play Gerard, “the descendant of all Pialat’s previous autobiographical surrogates” (Frédéric Bonnaud), and the father of a young boy (Pialat’s own son, Antoine), who sees too clearly his own obsolescence in the family unit. Le garçu is a structurally audacious, devastating coda to an unparalleled career.
