40TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING & LIVE EVENT
Cooley High

Followed by a conversation with Michael Schultz

Dir. Michael Schultz. 1975, 107 min. 35mm. With Glynn Turman, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. Celebrating its 40th Anniversary, Michael Schultz’s feature film debut Cooley High has been called “the Black American Graffiti,” but the only similarities are a soundtrack of oldies (lovers of Motown will rejoice) and a sense of nostalgia. Screenwriter Eric Monte (co-creator of Good Times) drew from his own 1960s Chicago experiences to tell the tale of two high-school buddies getting in and out of trouble and looking for girls. The film’s meandering comic quality makes its tragedy even more heartbreaking.
