Dir. Sudabeh Mortezai, 2014, Austria, 98 mins. Digital projection. With Ramasan Minkailov, Aslan Elbiev, Kheda Gazieva. In this sharply observed dramatic feature by documentary director Sudabeh Mortezai, an eleven-year-old Chechen boy, living in a refugee settlement outside Vienna, struggles with family responsibility, life in a tough neighborhood, and images of the dead war hero father he barely remembers. According to Peter Debruge in Variety, “Without the slightest hint of manipulation, Macondo opens its heart to a character who becomes our connection to an incredibly foreign lifestyle, just an arm’s reach from opportunity the rest of us take for granted.”
