SCREENING
Brazilian Western (Faroeste Caboclo)

Dir. Rene Sampaio. 2014, 105 mins. In Portuguese with English subtitles. Digital projection. With Fabricio Boliveira, Isis Valverde, Felipe Abib. This slick love-crime drama set in Brasilia at the end of the 1980s chronicles the epic saga of Joao De Santo Cristo (John of Holy Christ), an outlaw made legendary by iconic composer/singer Renato Russo's famous song (released by his Legiao Urbana band in 1988). Seamlessly melding the western genre with Brazilian folk storytelling, Sampaio fully succeeds in keeping authentic class and race struggles alive within the framework of a passionately romantic and entertaining genre piece.
