France. Dir. Mélanie Laurent. 2014, 91 mins. With Joséphine Japy, Lou de Laâge, Isabelle Carré. Actress-turned-director Mélanie Laurent’s (Inglourious Basterds, Beginners) impressive sophomore feature is a gripping portrait of teenage friendship turned toxic. High-school senior Charlie is immediately drawn to the effortlessly cool, confident new girl in school, Sarah. But what starts as a seemingly perfect friendship sours as it grows into something dangerous, obsessive, and ultimately tragic. Boasting standout performances from leads Japy and de Laâge—both César Award-nominated for Most Promising Actress—Breathe captures the turbulence of the adolescent years with raw emotional honesty.
