Albania. Dir. Iris Elezi, Thomas Logoreci. 2014, 104 mins. With Flonja Kodheli, Artur Gorishti, Fioralba Kryemadhi. A café in a remote village in Albania becomes a microcosm of a country haunted by history in this poetic and wonderfully offbeat drama. Manager Juli, owner Beni, and waitress Nora all work together at Bota (Albanian for “the world”), the local gathering place that functions as the social center of their little town. Along with the café’s unconventional regulars, the trio’s intersecting personal lives form a captivating portrait of modern day Albania that ultimately touches on a particularly troubling chapter of the country’s Communist past.
