This moving and revelatory portrayal of a family of color is unusual in the history of Brazilian cinema. Novais Oliveira asked his brother and aging parents to play themselves as he plumbed the microcosms of their day-to-day lives, trying to shed light on the imperceptible shift in order that caused his parents to separate after 35 years of marriage. His love for his characters and eye for observation are palpable, as well as his formal and dramatic approach: generous long sequences that allow fictional situations to unfold naturally, and wide frames that allow space for everyday moments to take root.
