After the Rain (Depois da chuva)

Dirs. Claudio Marques, Marilia Hughes. 2014, 95 mins. In Portuguese with English subtitles. Digital projection. With Pedro Maia, Sophia Corral, Talis Castro, Paula Carneiro, Victor Corujeira. It is 1984 and the city of Salvador de Bahia prepares for Brazil's first presidential elections after 20 years of dictatorship. As his school prepares for its own first council elections, sixteen-year-old Caio's political awakening begins, as he shifts from a critical outsider to a vocal participant. Focusing on a period seldom portrayed in Brazilian cinema, Hughes and Marques's semi-autobiographical debut highlights questions about the possibility of political and social change. Their sensitive portrayal of characters and raw performances by non-professional actors infuse the film with a rebellious energy that perfectly captures this effervescent moment of endless possibility. The award-winning original soundtrack, performed live in the film, blends imported punk with traditional local instruments, setting the perfect tone for Caio's bold lunge forward into Brazil's uncertain future.
