Dir. Leon Ichaso. Dominican Republic, 1997, 75 mins. 35mm print from the director! With René Lavan, Mayte Vilán. Filmed in Santo Domingo with a cast of Cuban-American émigrés, Bitter Sugar incorporates archival documentary footage to construct a naturalistic tale of love and disillusion. A student in Havana, Gustavo, struggles with his faith in the revolution as his family is confronted with the harsh realities of daily life.
