Dir. Richard Linklater. 2014, 165 mins. DCP. With Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke. Richard Linklater breaks new ground in the art of cinematic storytelling with this dazzlingly ambitious coming-of-age epic. Filmed over the course of twelve years, it follows one boy’s journey from childhood to adulthood, rendered with a remarkable naturalism that’s heightened by watching the actors age and change over the course of the movie. Patricia Arquette gives the film’s finest performance, as the struggling single mother. Throughout, Linklater focuses not only on the milestones, but on the quiet spaces in between, creating a unique American time capsule.
