Overnight, Terence Davies became the hero of contemporary British cinema when this masterpiece premiered at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival to thunderous acclaim. Davies's bifurcated, autobiographical story of a working-class family in 1950s Liverpool, which takes place before and after the death of its abusive patriarch (Pete Postlethwaite, in his breakthrough), is a hauntingly emotional, exquisitely designed, and, in its fragmented chronology, narratively unconventional take on the cinematic memory piece. In a poll of 150 film industry experts for Time Out, Distant Voices, Still Lives was named the third greatest British film ever made. Michael Koresky, who has written the first American study of the work of Terence Davies (2014, University of Illinois Press), will introduce the film. A book signing follows the screening.
