Hungary. Dir. Bence Fliegauf. 2012, 86 mins. Digital projection. New York premiere. With Katalin Toldi, Gyöngyi Lendvai, Lajos Sárkány. A Romany community struggles to scrape by after a series of racially motivated murders in this haunting drama from one of Hungary’s most esteemed auteurs. Zeroing in on 24 anxious hours in the life of one family, the film gathers in intensity as ethnic tensions simmer and threaten to explode, the sense of unease masterfully heightened by the uncanny sound design. Winner of the Jury Grand Prix at the Berlin Film Festival, this alternately lyrical and vérité-gritty work offers an unforgettable, eye-opening look at the plight of the Gypsy people.
