Cuba. Dir. Gerardo Chijona. 2013, 95 mins. NY premiere. With Reynaldo Miravalles, Enrique Molina, Daisy Granados. On the first anniversary of his wife Maruja’s death, Lino Catala, a serious and traditional man, is approached by Larry Po, a quirky man with multiple personalities. Larry confesses to Lino that Maruja led a double life: by day an ordinary housewife, and by night an impressive bolero singer. The two men begin an intense investigation of Maruja’s past while trying to find the whereabouts of Esther, Larry’s great love. Based on the novel by Cuban writer Eliseo Alberto Diego García, Esther Somewhere marks the return of legendary actor Reinaldo Miravalles, who left Havana 20 years ago. The film won Best Screenplay and Best Film at the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival.
