Mary Rutledge (Hopkins) arrives from the east, and goes to work at the roulette wheel of Louis Charnalis's Bella Donna, a rowdy gambling house, hoping to marry rich. The casino’s powerful, corrupt boss (Robinson) tries to win her by making her a star performer. Set in San Francisco during the Gold Rush era, this lusty, atmospheric film combines elements of crime, Western, melodrama and adventure genres.
