Scarface (1983)

Dir. Brian De Palma. 1983, 170 mins. 35mm. With Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer. Showing alongside the Howard Hawks gangster classic on which it is based (showing September 21), De Palma’s grandiose update is a grunge opera of mayhem. Pacino gives one of his most fiery, beloved performances as Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant who becomes a Miami drug kingpin. Gonzo and brilliantly trashy, Scarface is the definition of too much—but that's the point of this blood-splattered, coke-strewn tale of American excess.
