Hal Ashby’s first feature, directed from Bill Gunn’s script, is among the funniest social comedies of the period. The hero goes native as did the cast, which largely moved into then ungentrified Park Slope during the shoot as Pearl Bailey commuted daily from Broadway where she was starring in the all-black production of Hello, Dolly!.
